Listen. I have a secret I want you to keep, just between the two of us, all right? I want you to stay close to Agent Jayden as much as you can. He'll take care of you, and he'll answer to me if Lieutenant Blake so much as looks cross-eyed at you.
[DAMN RIGHT.]
But if something happens, this is our plan, okay? If something happens, I want you to head straight for Goldenrod City. Fly if you can; ask someone for directions if you need to. When you get there, you buy a train ticket and take the Magnet Train to Saffron City. I'm going to make sure you have enough money in your account that you can do that at any time, and to cover the cost of a room at any hotel. But you save it for an emergency. And you call me anytime, day or night, if you have to. No one is going to hurt you again.
[The plan takes Shaun by surprise. He's never been trusted with that much responsibility and autonomy for his own fate so explicitly before.
It's easier for him to trust Miss Carmen, because teachers are basically the only authority figures who have never broken a promise to him, and even though she told him she wasn't a teacher, he's still settled her in that category in his head. He's taking notes in his head. He wants to be able to do it right, if he has to.]
O-okay. I promise I won't tell anybody, Miss Carmen. Go to Goldenrod and take the Magnet Train to Saffron.
I-I thought bad things didn't really happen here... I thought it was safer...
Don't worry about me, I'm fine. [Even if she was involved in fighting off the attack.]
And well, so far it seems like a good idea. I don't know what level Buizel and Poochyena are supposed to evolve at, but Falkner's team has pokémon with levels all in the thirties. Even if your Pichu evolves, you might still need to train for a while.
Buizel evolves at level 26, and Poochyena evolves at level 18.
[Beat.]
I started training Susie hard again even though she's so much tougher than the others already because someone else from my world showed up, and I don't...trust him.
She's... pretty much the same as always! Y'know, pissed off and out to kick my ass.
[Given the amount of physical damage a Pokemon like her could potentially cause him, Yusuke probably ought to sound a lot more worried about this than he does; as it is, though, he might as well be discussing the weather, the way he so casually describes her prolonged pattern of trying to get him. Oh, dimwit.]
She's been kinda down since you guys met, though. I think she really liked you.
[there's a little gasp from the other end of the line, and Shaun almost calls Yusuke out on the swear. But the older boy continues before he can, and what Yusuke says next is interesting, to say the least.]
You do? Well, if you're still in Violet maybe you could travel with us.
[It's an innocent solution - he really did like the Heracross, after all. She wasn't as bad as Yusuke made her out to be. At least, not to Shaun.]
[Despite himself, Yusuke is a little taken aback by Shaun's response: he'd been expecting some variation on "oh, really?", not an invitation to travel with him. He manages to refrain from lapsing into an awkward pause, however, valiantly pushing past his own feelings of surprise to say:]
Oh, uh... actually, I was wanting to know if you'd be interested in just taking her off my hands - y'know, since she likes you so much better than me. I don't wanna say I've given up on her, but I mean, there's no use keeping her on my team if it's gonna make her unhappy, and since she and I never got along that great anyway, I figured...
[... and from there, he sort of trails off, unsure of how to finish that particular thought. Yusuke doesn't know why, but he's feeling a little sheepish. Probably because he doesn't often call kids up offering to give them a monster bug. You are expanding his horizons in the weirdest of ways, Johto. :I]
[If Shaun checks his PC, he'll find an egg. It's an Axew with Leer, Endure, Outrage, and Reversal. There's a note attached.]
You look like a kid who could use a dinosaur. Since I don't know if it's a boy or a girl yet, they don't have a name, so give them a good one, all right?
