Video/Action for Violet City

[It's the middle of the afternoon, and Shaun has something very important to share.]

Guess what! Guess what!

[The camera pans over to a rather proud-looking Floatzel and a Mightyena who's sitting loyally and staring at the Pokegear (really, at the boy holding it) with a curious head tilt, her tail wagging against the ground.]

Susie and Richie evolved! Look how big they are! Isn't that awesome?

[Forgive him, he's still at the self-centered age where he's relatively positive that almost everyone cares about his accomplishments. Or his pokemon's accomplishments, as it were. Also, Mightyena are rumored to only obey experienced trainers, so this kid must be no pushover to have her panting happily and butting her head against his hand when he reaches out from behind the Pokegear to scratch her behind the ear.]

Oh! Those look really cool! What do you mean they evolved, though? And where can I get one of the black things? She looks really strong and scary! But the good kind of scary. I want one, too!

[Oh hello girl around his age. Shaun's face appears on the screen again as he turns it around, and goes over to a bench to sit down to talk.]

You mean you don't know about evolution yet? Little pokemon evolve into bigger and stronger ones as you raise them. Richie, my Mightyena - that is, the one who looks like a dog - is almost three times as big as she was before she evolved.

...She was a present. I dunno where you can find them in the wild. There might be breeders with eggs, though! She was a Poochyena, if that helps you find one.

[Emily herself hasn't really had much of a chance to meet anyone around her age, let alone a boy. So this is pretty cool! But mostly she's focused on the Pokemon right now.]

I had no idea they could do that! Does that mean Corvo- Uh, hold on. [She moves the camera and points it down to the little green and white Ralts that is her starter Pokemon.] Will he evolve, too and get big and strong?

Oh, I want to find an egg for one then! I... don't really think I like the idea of catching them. Eggs seem better than stuffing them in balls...

[Shaun's never seen a Ralts before, but by the size of it and his own genre savvy, he can make an educated guess.]

Probably! You can look it up with your Pokedex or ask Nurse Joy to make sure, but he looks like he probably does.

Well they have to have their own Pokeballs even when you hatch them. Otherwise they're just the same as wild pokemon, and someone else could come and catch them. Keeping them in Pokeballs is like putting a collar on them. So that other trainers know they're yours.

It also protects them if they get hurt in battle, and makes it easier to carry them back to the Pokemon Center.

I know all of that.

[Or at least she's saying she does, but mostly she's just being stubborn because she doesn't like the idea of Pokeballs at all regardless.]

I will put them in balls when I have to, but only if I really have to. I wouldn't want to be put in tiny balls, so I don't think I want to do that to my Pokemon, either. It's scary enough being locked in a tiny room, I don't want to think what a tiny ball might be like!

Hatching eggs seems nicer anyway, too. Like... they're really yours if they hatch, and that you aren't just borrowing them from the forest.

[A shudder runs down Shaun's spine when she mentions being locked in a tiny room, because he knows what it's like to be locked in a tiny place, and suddenly it feels like the chill is cutting through his wool coat and soaking into his bones.

Then he gets defensive.]

Pokeballs are nothing like that. They don't hurt them at all, and it's not mean if you have to. It keeps them safe if they're hurt, and it keeps them from getting hurt worse until you can get them to the Pokemon center. I like to keep mine out with me too, but there's nothing wrong with keeping them in the Pokeballs!

If you say so.

[He isn't the only one who feels the need to get defensive. She knows exactly what it's like to be locked in a room. She was locked in a room inside of a brothel for six months.]

Why are you so defensive over these stupid balls, anyway?

[Because he doesn't want to be associated with the man who locked him in a well to drown for four days.]

Because. They're not as bad as you think they are.

Why does it matter though? You can use them as much as you want, I won't stop you. This is a stupid thing to argue about! We should both just agree that having them out to play and keep us company is way more fun than putting them in the balls anyway.

[Susie put a paw on his arm and leaned in to butt her snout against his chin reassuringly. Richie let out a whine and put her large head on Shaun's knee to comfort him.

Shaun calms down.]

It is more fun.

[Beat.]

My name's Shaun.

[Emily can't help but smile at that, if a little sadly. She wishes she had ones that would do th- and then suddenly Ralts is at her side, pressing against her and nuzzling his head into her side. Oh. Well then, it's as if he read her mind. Corvo is always really perceptive like that, she's starting to notice.]

Mine is Emily. How long have you been here, Shaun?

Since January. I remember because it was right around my birthday.

What about you?

Almost two weeks, I think. Have you already left the town you woke up in?

And... also, happy late birthday. It's too bad I missed it!

Uh-huh. I'm in Violet City. It's the first city on the gym circuit. Have you left New Bark?

[When he'd been here two weeks, he and Norman were getting settled in Violet. But maybe she didn't have someone to go with. Shaun did realize he was lucky - traveling with Norman had been a lot better than traveling to Cherrygrove on his own.]

Congrats on having your pokémon evolve Shaun!

[She smiling a lot. She remembers what it feels like to see a pokémon evolve for the first time. It was different than with a Digimon, but still just as awesome.]

[~~It's permanent, for one thing.~~ Shaun looks proud indeed when he turns the camera around again.]

I'm glad to hear it. Most of your team should be strong enough to challenge Falkner soon!

[She shakes her head at that.]

Not yet! But I will be soon.

[I-it's not because she's scared or anything, baka]

Oh, it's in June! June 15th.

Well, dang.

I bet Susie won't have to worry so much about getting shocked by a Pichu now.

_{[A big evolved Pokemon should be able to shrug off a baby's accidental attacks pretty easily, right?]}

[It really is a proud day for the kid. Shaun really does put in a lot of work into his pokemon training. There is not one day where the boy will tell Norman he does not want to train. It made keeping an eye on him a strenuous task but as long they kept in communication, everything is fair game.

Throughout their entire expedition, this is perhaps the most confident Norman has ever seen out of Shaun. The kid sure is making a hell of a lot progress than Norman. Alvin who is padding along behind him is still in his Patrat stage. The bug-eyed Patrat doesn't seem to mind though, Alvin is in his own little world munchin' on a berry.

Norman's hands are tied behind his back where he is holding a small package.]

Showing off your new pokemon, eh?

I hope so! I still want to wait for Calvin to evolve, but I think he's pretty tough for a Pichu.

[His Growlithe doesn't want to evolve yet. They've had this conversation.]

Are you going to travel with somebody? Have you been camping before?

[He was more scared of staying in New Bark than of venturing out into the wilderness with just an inflatable weasel.]

Oh, then I'll have to remember that when it's June!

[Shaun giggles a little as he turns the camera back around. Susie gives a proud "Floatzel!" and smooths her paws over her yellow inflatable sac that now gives her the appearance of a life raft from behind.

Shaun gives Heather a sheepish smile.]

I think she's saying I was always more worried about it than she was.

[Shaun had fallen into a routine that he knew from hours playing his gameboy huddled in the tepee with Jason, the screens lit by a pair of little dinosaur LEDs that plugged into the side of the handheld. Training for real is a lot harder and a lot more fun than just playing a game, and Shaun has become almost addicted to the rush of excitement when one of his Pokemon gets stronger. The pride he feels for his team is immeasurable.

He jumps a little when the agent sneaks up on him, and he turns around to face the man who he's quickly come to trust like family (like a fun uncle, which Shaun had never had before), hiding his Pokegear behind his back in unconscious imitation of Norman's stance as he looks up at the agent sheepishly.]

Is that bad?

No.

[He paces closer towards Shaun. When Alvin spots Susie and Richie besides Shaun he gobbles the rest of his berry and runs over toward the two, swishing his tail around happily.]

Nothing wrong with showing off every now and then. Just don't do it too many times or else you'll have to eat those words in front of everybody.

[Norman keeps the package hidden behind. Even keeping one hand behind with it as he gives Richie a good scratch behind the ears.]
