[The screen flickers on to show a boy who looks like he’s a little bit in a fog. Behind him, a Buizel bounces around happily through the snowdrifts, nearly disappearing only to poke her head up every now and then, her whiskers and fur caked with snow.]

Hello? Is anyone out there? My name is Shaun Mars. There was this lady who called herself my mom, and she gave me a backpack full of food and clothes and stuff, and I sorta...just wanted to know if that had happened to anyone else. And also, if the food was...safe to eat. It’s like rice, and I think there’s fish and vegetables and stuff too, or something.

I think I might've gotten someone else's Pokegear thing. It says it's my birthday today, but my birthday was two days ago.

What kind of Pokemon do you have?

Well, I have quite a few of them. I have an Umbreon, Pichu, Charizard, Empoleon, Meganium, Togekiss, Pigeotto, and a bunch of others.

[That's a lot of Pokemon.]

The only one I have so far is Susie.

[Well, she has been here for two years.]

Do you like her?

[Shaun glances offscreen to Susie, who peeks her head out of a snowdrift and peers at him.]

She's nice. She's been trying to take care of me.

I'm glad to hear it Shaun.

[She thinks for a moment, wondering about something.]

Do you have anyone there in New Bark that you can travel to the next town with? That journey is a little dangerous to do on your own...

[Shaun hesitates.]

No...

I'll be fine. I can do it. I'm not alone, I have Susie.

[Hikari frowns a bit. Sure, his age wasn't really that much of a problem. Her brother and the others lasted for far longer in the Digital World, but that was when they were all together.

Would Shaun really be okay alone?]

Are you sure? Did you used to go camping a lot?

[He went camping a grand total of once, and that wasn't so much camping as it was pitching a tent in the backyard and playing gameboy games with Jason all night until their mom occasionally brought them snacks.]

Kinda. But Susie knows what she's doing, right?

... I'm not so sure. I mean, if there was water areas on the way to Cherrygrove, maybe. But Susie's pokémon species isn't native to that area of Johto.

[If it even appeared in Johto at all, actually.]

[It does according to Route's map, but not until later routes.]

...Still, I've got the guidebook.

[Even if she left now to fly to New Bark, it'd be two days before she got to him from Goldenrod.]
