How many people here are artists? Like the drawer kind specially but if you make other stuff that counts too.

If you draw what do you draw? Are you good at it?

I want to know how to get better at drawing.

I've been drawing since I was little. Now I mostly paint, but that still takes sketching things out first, so the same skills apply.

[Once they hear art talk, Neku's Smeargle, plural Smeargle, all pile on camera to see as well. The two adults, and the puppy all wanting to give their input]

I hated hearing this when I first started, but honestly? Practice.

[Neku doesn't mind, he's just too busy wrangling paintdogs to type]

Well yeah, you're not gonna see a difference yourself. It changes so slowly and a tiny bit at a time so it'll all look the same to you.

Think of... think of it like a yen jar. Or penny jar or fricken pokedollar jar, whatever. Small change is something people will throw away or lose and not care one bit. Cuz it's not WORTH anything.

But if you keep gathering them up eventually you get something a lot better. So even if you're drawing something that looks like crap, you gotta remember that it's a tiny part of something you'll eventually be proud of.

I might be able to help there.

Have you been using perspective lines?

[Molly's hanging out with him drawing herself, just idly stretched out on her bed with Scott obnoxiously draped right over her back like a warm scarf. Ember is curled up between her arms under her chin. Which is awesome, cause it's still kinda cold out.]

[When her gear beeps and she goes to look at it, she hadn't actually realized that Shaun had been typing to begin with, so she shoots him a look when she recognises his user ID.]

[And then returns to her drawing.]

Tell me if you get any good tips. I want to get better too.

[Molly pauses to think about this for a moment and taps the orange pencil against her chin a few times.]

Animals. So I can draw my pokémon better.

What about you?
walkersystem: (if your ability is back ...)

[action]

[personal profile] walkersystem 2015-03-07 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[Molly shoots him a curious look and is quiet for a short moment.]

What kind of buildings?
walkersystem: (acquiesce)

[action]

[personal profile] walkersystem 2015-03-07 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[Molly straightens out her arms so he's leaning up on her elbows more, which cause Scott and Ember to stir a little, but Molly keeps her eyes on Shaun, all open expression.]

No, tell me.
walkersystem: (I told you he was coming)

[action]

[personal profile] walkersystem 2015-03-07 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[Molly doesn't seem to find this silly at all, and she sits up properly. Scott gives a surprised yelp as he slides off her back but then simply curls up on her pillow when she picks up Ember to place in her lap.]

Oh.

[Cause even if it's not silly, it's kind of ... serious. And she hesitates for a moment before she approaches it, but she does anyway, just friendly.]

... what kind of house would you build?
walkersystem: (nod)

[action]

[personal profile] walkersystem 2015-03-07 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[She nods and strokes through Ember's soft fur.]

Do you know which city you'd pick? Cause there are a few.

I draw a little, sometimes. I wouldn't say I'm good enough at it to teach someone else, though...

[He draws so little it barely really counts, but anyway.]

There isn't really anything specific I draw when I do. Is there something you're trying to get better at?
samsa: (Contemplative □ that book was so bad)

[text]

[personal profile] samsa 2015-03-07 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I see. Buildings can be difficult...but something that might help you is to practice drawing shapes. Like...squares and rectangles and things.
samsa: (Talk □ we're out of beans)

[text]

[personal profile] samsa 2015-03-07 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly. Everything is just made up of shapes, after all. So once you get better at drawing boxes in 3D, you should have an easier time drawing buildings.
samsa: (Lying □ I ain't no truther)

[text]

[personal profile] samsa 2015-03-07 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, well...everyone is different, but I would say mostly ovals and circles. Some people are shaped more like rectangles or triangles. So, um...

Your arm for example would be...cylinders, circles for joints, and small rectangles in places, I would guess.
samsa: (Bluffing □ with a forked tongue)

I don't draw. It never really interested me, and there's never been that much time for me to do it.

[As much as she didn't want to be a downer, she moved on.]

I did know someone that wanted to make art. He seemed really good at it, and drew everything he saw.

He did! It was pretty weird, but my sister said that's just what some artists do. It's for when they find "inspiration" I guess.

Last I saw him he sketched some weird stuff after we helped him.

i draw! it's mostly buildings, since that was my job, but i draw other things as well. i've been told i'm very good at it, but it's very difficult to judge your own art objectively.

a lot of it is observation. observation and practice! nothing comes of giving up halfway, after all!

[It takes Royce a minute to answer too, because the idea of teaching someone is much different than the idea of showing someone what he's done. No one's ever asked him to teach them anything that didn't end in frustration.]

[... But if there's a genuine desire to learn, how can he say no, really?]

i'm not much of a teacher i'm afraid. but i might be able to offer you some pointers.

I draw when I need to, honestly. But if you want to get better just practice drawing everything you see. I hear that helps.

[Practice is fun and boring all at the same time.]
killer_sweets: (So what?)

Practice drawing things that you see, doesn't mean draw crap and not improving. It means if you see you messed up a drawing then, you'll work to fix it the next time you draw it.

I've been drawing and painting since I was young, and while it came rather naturally to me it's definitely the sort of thing you have to practice.

What are you looking to draw specifically? If you're looking to specialize in people or Pokemon, I'm sure there are books on anatomy that you can find that would be helpful in that regard. It's not as good as live subjects, but it's a good way to familiarize yourself with the basics.

Just about thirty-six, give or take some strange time nonsense.

Ah, well, in that case, you'd really just want to pay attention to buildings when you see them, then. You really have to train yourself to look at fine details, or you'll never really get what you're drawing. Of course, you have to be careful not to miss the forest for the trees, as well.

a bunch of other people probably already said this but i guess if drawin is like learning to do anything else, practice makes perfect, right?

so i figure if you draw like one thing every day at least, you'll start getting better at it

I draw a little bit but I'm not that great at it. I'm a little better at things like landscapes and stuff over things like actual people or pokemon. I'm probably echoing everyone else here but it's like they've said; practice. My trees used to look like stick figures for a long time.

I've been interested in art since I was a child. I mostly do portraits and figure drawing. I can provide you with some tips and examples if you need help.

I like to draw, too!

Garry said that you have to practice a lot....and not give up, even if you draw the same thing 500 times!
